CGA’s August & September 2020 Safety Publications (New Releases & Revisions)

October 14, 2020

During August and September 2020, the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) issued the following new and revised safety standards, guidelines, and position statements:

CGA E-8, Guideline for Gas Flowmeters

Released: September 25, 2020 (3rd Edition)

This publication provides a safety and performance guideline for flowmeters and the flowmeter portion of a flowmeter regulator combination designed for use by the welding, cutting, and allied process industries.

CGA G-4.4, Oxygen Pipeline and Piping Systems

Released: August 25, 2020 (6th Edition)
Special Attribute: Harmonized publication

The scope of this publication is for metal oxygen pipelines, distribution piping systems, and gaseous oxygen piping on an air separation plant external to the coldbox. The scope is limited to gaseous oxygen with a temperature range between –22 °F and 400 °F (–30 °C and 200 °C), pressures up to 3000 psi (21 MPa), and a dew point of –22 °F (–30 °C) or less depending on local conditions.

Although it is possible to safely use oxygen at higher temperatures and/or pressures, such applications are beyond the scope of this publication. In these cases, additional materials testing and/or a risk assessment, as appropriate to the application, shall be undertaken.

The purpose of this publication is to further the understanding of those engaged in the safe design, operation, and maintenance of gaseous oxygen transmission and distribution systems. It is not intended to be a mandatory standard or code.

CGA G-19.1, Standard for Natural Gas Supply Systems

Released: August 17, 2020 (2nd Edition)

This publication is intended to cover the design, installation, maintenance, and removal of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) supply systems. It is expected that the reader has a basic understanding of pressure vessel and piping design or operations. This publication is not intended to cover pipeline gas equipment.

CGA G-19.1 provides general information concerning systems that store and supply natural gas in its liquid state, gaseous state, or both. It provides direction for site selection and system considerations, regulatory compliance, selection and installation of equipment, startup, operation, and maintenance of the system.

CGA H-5, Standard for Bulk Hydrogen Supply Systems

Released: September 16, 2020 (3rd Edition)

This standard contains minimum requirements for locating/siting, selecting equipment, installing, starting up, maintaining, and removing bulk hydrogen supply systems. Two types of bulk hydrogen supply systems are covered in this standard: liquid and gaseous.

CGA H-5 covers the entire process including site selection, regulatory compliance, equipment selection, equipment transportation and setting, equipment installation, system startup, operation and system removal. This standard also briefly discusses health hazards and safety considerations. Typical flow diagrams are also included.

CGA P-8.9, Bulk Liquid Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Argon Storage Systems at Production Sites

Released: August 17, 2020 (2nd Edition)
Special Attribute: Harmonized publication

This publication specifically covers storage installations on production sites where the storage tank is flat-bottom constructed, is connected to the production process plant, and the individual tank capacity is greater than 125 000 liters.

The information contained in this publication applies only to new installations designed after the publication of this document and not to existing installations. However, the information contained in this publication may benefit existing installations or those in the project phase.

CGA P-8.9 provides guidance for those persons directly associated with the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of bulk cryogenic liquid storage systems. The intent of this publication is to ensure that a minimum, uniform level of safety is provided throughout the industrial gas industry for the protection of the public and industry employees. Users of this publication should recognize that it is presented with the understanding that it cannot take the place of sound engineering judgment, training, and experience.

CGA P-18, Standard for Bulk Inert Gas Systems

Released: September 16, 2020 (5th Edition)

Special Attribute: Referenced by NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) and ICC (International Code Council)

This standard contains minimum requirements for locating/siting, selecting equipment, installing, starting up, maintaining, and removing bulk inert gas supply systems.

The bulk inert supply system terminates at the source valve where the gas or liquid supply first enters the supply line.

CGA PS-63, CGA Position Statement on Mitigating Food Fraud Risk in Food Gases

Released: August 17, 2020 (1st Edition)

This publication describes CGA’s position on mitigating food fraud risk in food gases. This position statement explains, through a vulnerability assessment, the minimal opportunity and risk of various types of food fraud in the food gas industry.

CGA defines food fraud as the intentional substitution, addition, tampering, or misrepresentation of raw materials, final product, storage, or distribution arrangements, product information, or false or misleading statements made about a product that could impact consumer health or mislead customers about the origins of the product or its raw materials, for economic gain.

CGA V-24, Guideline for Use of Gaskets in High Pressure Medical Oxygen Cylinder Service (Formerly TB-29)

Released: September 25, 2020 (1st Edition)

This publication provides guidelines for the safe use of sealing gaskets in high pressure medical oxygen cylinders with post valves at patient and end user locations.

This publication does not apply to cylinder fill plants, valves not designed to accept a sealing washer such as the CGA 540 threaded connection, valve integrated pressure regulators (VIPRs), or portable cryogenic liquid cylinder outlets.
