CGA Board of Directors Approves Strategic Hydrogen Plan

July 16, 2024

The Compressed Gas Association (CGA) Board of Directors has officially approved a comprehensive Strategic Hydrogen Plan aimed at accelerating the development of hydrogen standards both within the CGA and on a global scale. This ambitious initiative allocates substantial resources towards technical and administrative support, underscoring the association’s commitment to facilitating the rapid advancement of hydrogen technologies and infrastructure.

Key Highlights of the Strategic Hydrogen Plan:

  • Resource Allocation: Significant investments will be made to enhance technical and administrative capabilities, ensuring robust support for the standards development process.
  • Expedited Standards Development: The plan prioritizes speeding up the creation and implementation of hydrogen standards, addressing the urgent need for uniform and harmonized guidelines across the industry.
  • Global Harmonization: By focusing on global standards, the CGA aims to foster international collaboration and coherence, promoting the widespread adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source.

The approval of this Strategic Hydrogen Plan marks a pivotal step in the CGA’s ongoing efforts to lead and support the hydrogen economy’s growth.

In 2024 6 CGA hydrogen standards have already been published. Work is currently being done to update, reaffirm, or publish the following 8 standards:

  • G-5.3, Commodity Specification for Hydrogen
  • C-6.4, Visual Inspection of NGV and HGV Fuel Containers
  • H-5, Standard for Bulk Hydrogen Supply Systems
  • Hydrogen Systems Separation Distances (New, IHC)
  • Safe Operation of H2, CO, and Syngas Pipeline Systems (New, IHC)
  • Bulk LH2 Hydrogen Loading and Unloading Connections (New, IHC)
  • G-5.5, Standard for Hydrogen Vent Systems
  • H-10, Combustion Safety for Steam Reformer Operation

There is also a significant effort underway to produce harmonized standards.

The following harmonized standards are under development:

  • Revision of G-5.3, Commodity Specification for Hydrogen
  • Revision of C-6.4,Methods for External Visual Inspection of Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) and Hydrogen Gas Vehicle (HGV) Fuel Containers
  • Revision of H-5, edition 3, Standard for Bulk Hydrogen Supply Systems
  • Draft Development of Design of Bulk Liquid Hydrogen Loading andUnloading Connections
  • Draft Development of Hydrogen Systems Separation Distances
  • Draft Development of Safe Operation of Hydrogen, Carbon Monoxide, and Syngas Pipeline Systems

CGA remains dedicated to ensuring safety, reliability, and efficiency within the hydrogen sector, contributing to a sustainable and green future.
