CGA’s eLearning Library Offers Unique Compressed Gas Training Resource

June 18, 2020

Here at the Compressed Gas Association (CGA), we’re focused on developing safety standards that reflect industry best practices for handling industrial, medical, and food gases, in as safe and effective a manner as possible. Our members who write these standards leverage in-depth knowledge and many years of experience in understanding the hazards of these gases, and knowing how best to mitigate them – all with the goal of keeping everyone who comes into contact with these products as safe as possible.

We recognize, however, that some of our standards can be technically dense, especially for those new to the subject matter. That’s why we created our growing library of eLearning modules. These innovative training resources are designed to provide a helpful roadmap for employees who may need more extensive coaching in how to safely handle and work with compressed gases.

Each module explores simple concepts presented in a concise, easy-to-follow format, and includes video demonstrations and quizzes to ensure the viewer is successfully absorbing the content. Individual users can complete modules at their own pace (they can close the training at any time and return later, picking up where they left off).

“Your…training modules are [of] exceptional quality, useful for safety awareness for entry-level and intermediate employees, and ‘first of its kind’ in the compressed gas industry to our knowledge.

Embedding these eLearning modules within our corporate training program represents one of the largest safety improvements [our company] has realized since becoming a member of CGA.”

CGA Member Calls eLearning Modules “Exceptional”

Here’s what a representative from one of our Fortune 500 member companies had to say about the value and impact of our first set of eLearning modules, released in 2018 (TM-1, Safe Handling and Storage of Compressed Gases; TM-2, Safe Handling of Acetylene Cylinders; and TM-3, Safe Handling of Cryogenic Liquids in Portable Containers):

“Your three new training modules are [of] exceptional quality, useful for safety awareness for entry-level and intermediate employees, and ‘first of its kind’ in the compressed gas industry to our knowledge.

Embedding these eLearning modules within our corporate training program represents one of the largest safety improvements [our company] has realized since becoming a member of CGA.

We have not seen ANYTHING available even close to your quality and breadth of coverage from any source we have explored for years – including from the U.S. Department of Transportation, other industry groups in the U.S. or abroad, or any private firm offering training for purchase.

When I have made proposals to well-known safety training groups, to create compressed gas training, and I have provided just a skeleton outline of what we need, the price has been $25,000-$50,000, with $3,000-$5,000 per year retainer to ‘keep current.’

Your initiative here is unparalleled, worldwide.”

Even seasoned industry veterans at this company report that they have gleaned useful insights from these training programs. For instance, one employee “with 30 years of shipping [experience] seeing spills and accidents,” said they still gained valuable knowledge from eLearning module CGA TM-3, Safe Handling of Cryogenic Liquids in Portable Containers.

eLearning Library Titles

At present, the CGA eLearning library consists of six training modules:

Over the coming months, we’ll continue publishing additional titles. The next two modules to be developed will be:

  • CGA TM-7, eLearning: Introduction to Compressed Gas Cylinder Valves
  • CGA TM-8, eLearning: Oxygen Safety

Each module costs $49 per person (for 90 days of viewing access), with volume discounts available.

We provide details about each of the six current eLearning modules below.

CGA TM-1, eLearning: Safe Handling and Storage of Compressed Gases

1st Edition, published in April 2018

This eLearning module covers the following major areas of compressed gas safety:

  • Cylinder and container examples
