CGA’s July 2019 Safety Publications (New Releases & Revisions)

August 4, 2019

During July 2019, the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) issued the following new and/or revised safety standards, position statements, safety alerts, and safety posters:

CGA C-6.3 – Standard for Visual Inspection of Low Pressure Aluminum Alloy Compressed Gas Cylinders

Released: July 1, 2019 (4th Edition)

Covers the periodic inspection of aluminum alloy compressed gas cylinders with service pressures of 500 psi (35 bar) or less.

This publication may not cover all circumstances for each individual cylinder type or lading. Inspection agencies may find it necessary to amplify these requirements to fit their condition of service if the service is more severe than encountered in transportation.

Previous edition cited in Title 49 (Transportation) of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), commonly referred to as “49 CFR”.

CGA P-82 – Standard for Maintenance of Transfer Hoses

Released: July 16, 2019 (1st Edition)

Provides industry-wide procedures for the inspection and testing of transfer hoses. Applies to transfer hose users when establishing inspection procedures. Contains acceptance criteria appropriate for use during product transfers and routine maintenance.

This publication applies to bulk compressed gas or cryogenic liquid product delivery and vapor return hose assemblies that are temporarily connected between the tank or any tank-mounted accessory and the point of supply or receipt during loading or off-loading.

While this publication represents the best industry practice currently available, it does not cover every possible hose design, installation, or compressed gas.

CGA PS-7 – CGA Position Statement on the Safe Transportation of Compressed Gas Cylinders and Cryogenic Liquid Containers in Passenger Vehicles

Released: July 12, 2019 (5th Edition)

This publication answers frequently asked questions regarding the safe transport of compressed gas cylinders and cryogenic liquid containers in passenger vehicles.

CGA PS-60 – CGA Position Statement on Prohibition on Refilling Single-Use Cylinders and Containers

Released: July 12, 2019 (1st Edition)

This publication describes CGA’s position on single-use (also called disposable, nonreturnable, or nonrefillable) cylinders and containers manufactured to specifications DOT-39, TC-39M, or CTC 39.

CGA SA-32 – Safety Alert: Hazards of Compressed Gas Cylinders in the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Environment

Released: July 11, 2019 (1st Edition)

This safety alert states that compressed gas cylinders, cylinder valves, cylinder regulators, other assemblies included with cylinders, or any other equipment used to supply compressed gases shall not be present in the same room as an MRI device, unless proven to be nonmagnetic and/or tested and deemed suitable for this environment.

CGA SP-J – Safety Poster: Proper Cart Usage for Liquid Cylinders

Released: July 11, 2019 (1st Edition)

This free safety poster reminds viewers to use only properly-designed hand trucks or carts when moving liquid cylinders.

CGA V-1 – Standard for Compressed Gas Cylinder Valve Outlet and Inlet Connections

Released: July 2, 2019 (14th Edition)

Special Attributes:

  • Referenced by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
  • Referenced by International Code Council (ICC)

CGA’s Cylinder Valve Committee, applying the experience and knowledge of gas producers, valve manufacturers, military services, federal agencies, and gas users, established detailed dimensions for the manufacture of new cylinder valve outlet and inlet connections.

This standard provides connections that minimize the possibility of hazardous misconnections. This publication is based on a coordinated plan for the inclusion of future connections as they are required on cylinders that are not permanently manifolded during transport and use.
