Spotlight on CGA Carbon Dioxide Committee

February 28, 2023

There are over 25 committees dedicated to supporting the CGA mission of providing technical and safety information through standard development. But who are these committees, what are their individual missions, and what do they bring to CGA members and the compressed gas industry?  This month we highlight the Carbon Dioxide Committee.

The Carbon Dioxide Committee strives to enhance carbon dioxide industry and public safety awareness and best practices. This is accomplished through the development and/or revision of safety standards, guidelines, and other publications, webinars and assisting with developing posters and other training materials. It also encourages establishing effective and reasonable levels of industry and consumer protection by providing guidance to government regulators and code officials in the creation of rules and regulations. In addition, the committee advocates standardization and harmonization to enhance safety, quality and productivity throughout the carbon dioxide supply chain in order.

The Carbon Dioxide Committee focuses on the production/purification, filling, transportation, and handling of carbon dioxide in all of its forms: liquid, gas, and solid (dry ice). While many know that carbon dioxide is commonly used in everyday beverages, such as soft drinks and beer, did you know that CGA member companies were instrumental in providing carbon dioxide for a multitude of applications in the industrial, food and medical areas, including dry ice for vaccine transport?

This committee’s current leadership is Jason Haley (Linde PLC), Chair, and Joe Angeloni (Messer North America Inc.), Vice Chair.  Jason and Joe bring their strong leadership skills to this committee which has a large publication library and active workload.

Key Carbon Dioxide Committee publications include:

  • G-6, Carbon Dioxide
  • G-6.1, Standard for Large Insulated Liquid Carbon Dioxide Systems at User Sites
  • G-6.2, Commodity Specification for Carbon Dioxide
  • G-6.3, Carbon Dioxide Cylinder Filling and Handling Procedures
  • G-6.4, Safe Transfer of Liquefied Carbon Dioxide in Insulated Cargo Tanks, Tank Cars, and Portable Containers
  • G-6.5, Standard for Small Stationary Insulated Carbon Dioxide Supply Systems
  • G-6.9, Dry Ice

The committee is currently developing two new publications, G-6.13, Standard for Stationary Uninsulated Cylinder Supply Systems for Carbon Dioxide and G—6.14, Standard for Carbon Dioxide Monitoring in Near Consumer and Industrial Applications. Keep an eye on future CGANews for announcements about these new publications!
