Committee Spotlight: Environmental
October 19, 2022
CGA has over 25 committees that support the CGA mission by providing technical and safety information through standard development. This month’s spotlight is on the Environmental Committee, which focuses on environmental matters of direct concern to the compressed gas industry that are of a technical, regulatory, and standardization nature.
In addition, they also consider any other environmental matters which are associated with the manufacture, transportation, storage, handling, use and disposition of compressed gases, cryogenic liquids, containers, and associated products. Committee members review and monitor proposed legislation at the federal, state, or provincial level that may impact the operations of CGA members. It focuses on developing recommendations for the publication, affirmation, or revision of CGA informational, technical and safety publications and/or audio visuals as appropriate, for use by manufacturers, distributors, users, shippers, carriers, equipment designers and installers, safety & environmental administrators, governmental agencies, and others.
The Environmental Committee also provides advisory guidance and education to the CGA, so that the Association can take appropriate action or make recommendations to industry, government, and national standards organizations. It also provides liaisons with other associations regarding environmental matters within its area of interest and expertise.
This committee’s current leadership is Anita Dawson (Air Liquide Holdings, Inc.), Chair, and Philipp Sieber (Messer North America, Inc.), Vice Chair. Both bring their expertise and experience to this committee as it navigates its course through environmental best practices, and attentiveness to regulations.
Key Environmental Committee publications are listed below:
- P-90, Guideline on Due diligence Considerations for the Compressed Gas Industry
- G-1.8, Guideline for the Operation and Closure of Carbide Lime Ponds
- P-22, Guideline for the Responsible Management and Disposition of Compressed Gases and their Cylinders
- P-37, Good Environmental Management Practices for the Compressed Gas Industry
- P-55, S. Environmental Regulations Inventory for Compressed Gas Industry
- P-60, Guideline for the Use of the North American Industrial Classification System and the Standard Industrial Classification Indices
This committee also recognizes environmental accomplishments annually to the top applicable individuals, teams, or facilities that have conducted activities/projects meeting identified “environmental excellence” criteria among CGA member companies. This Environmental Recognition Award, sponsored by Messer Americas, also enables CGA to identify and share good environmental practices as well as promote environmental awareness and improvements within companies and the industry. Example of the types of projects recognized are those that highlight a reduction in pollution, an increase in energy efficiency, resource conservation, etc. A maximum of three Environmental Recognition Awards are presented at the CGA Annual Meeting. The award is open to all CGA member companies, large and small. If your company has a project they would like to submit for recognition, more information will be available this autumn. The awards are for the 2022 calendar year and submissions are due January 11, 2023 to Christina Hartz.
