HYCO Committee Spotlight

January 31, 2023

CGA’s HYCO Committee Develops positions and publications to address the safe operation of plants producing hydrogen, carbon monoxide and synthesis gas (commonly known as HyCO Plants) and related materials affecting the compressed gas industry.

HyCO Plants

HyCO plants, or Hydrogen Carbon Oxidation, are industrial facilities that produce hydrogen through the steam methane reformation process. This process involves the reaction of natural gas (methane) with steam to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

The hydrogen produced by HyCO plants is used in various applications, including as a fuel for vehicles and as a source of energy for power generation. HyCO plants also capture the carbon dioxide produced in the reformation process, which can be used for enhanced oil recovery or stored underground in a process known as carbon capture and storage. HyCO plants play a crucial role in the transition to a low-carbon economy by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing clean hydrogen fuel.

HyCO Committee

The HYCO Committee generally meets twice yearly, with the next meeting being held on April 26, 2023, at the CGA Annual Meeting.

The HYCO Committee’s planned workload for the next 12 months includes:

  • Developing a new harmonized publication titled, Safe Operation of Hydrogen, Carbon Monoxide, and Syngas Pipeline Systems., This publication will combine elements of CGA G-5.6, Hydrogen Pipeline Systems, and CGA G-5.7, Carbon Monoxide and Syngas Pipeline Systems, to provide updated operational and maintenance guidelines for pipeline systems.
  • Revising CGA H-13, Hydrogen PSA Mechanical Integrity Requirements, and CGA H-12 Mechanical Integrity of Syngas Outlet Systems.
  • Aiding in the development of the Hydrogen chapter of the revised CGA Handbook.
