Our committees have responsibility for creating and maintaining CGA’s publications, responding to external inquiries, communicating with regulators and other authorities, hosting seminars and webinars, and more. Each committee is populated by subject matter experts from our member companies who work together to create consensus positions, and every company gets one vote.

Acetylene
The Acetylene Committee strives to promote safety and standardization in the generation, compression, filling, transportation, and handling of Acetylene gas, along with the raw materials and co-products associated with its’ generation and storage.
The committee considers technical, safety, and other matters directly concerning acetylene gas, equipment, and operating procedures affecting the compressed gas industry. This mission is accomplished by the preparation, publication, and maintenance of standards, position statements, technical and safety bulletins and alerts, and by working with other CGA committees, governmental agencies, and national/international standards organizations.
Atmospheric Gases and Equipment
The Atmospheric Gases and Equipment Committee promotes the safe production, handling, storage, and use of atmospheric gases and helium.
This includes the cryogenic and non-cryogenic processes and equipment for the separation and liquefaction of the atmospheric gases and helium and cryogenic hydrogen production. This also includes equipment such as compressors, cold boxes, expansion machines, pumps, bulk storage, pipelines, bulk gas systems at consumer sites, and tanker loading facilities (tankers, customer station design, and cylinder handling facilities are excluded).

Bulk Distribution Equipment and Standards
Promotes safety and best practices in the design, manufacture, operation, and maintenance of bulk distribution equipment and systems for industrial gases, refrigerated and cryogenic liquids, and related products.

Carbon Dioxide
The Carbon Dioxide Committee strives to enhance carbon dioxide industry and public safety awareness and best practices. This is accomplished through the development and/or revision of safety standards, guidelines, and other publications, webinars and training. The Carbon Dioxide Committee encourages establishing effective and reasonable levels of protection by providing guidance to government regulators in the creation of rules and regulations. The Carbon Dioxide Committee advocates standardization and harmonization within the carbon dioxide industry throughout the supply chain in order to enhance safety, quality and productivity.
Cylinder Specifications
The CGA Cylinder Specifications Committee is dedicated to developing and promoting gas container safety and usage standards, safe practices, and sound manufacturing practices for the gas industry. The Committee encourages compliance with regulatory and industry principles related to gas containment. Our members include gas container manufacturers, independent inspection agencies, gas manufacturers, regulatory agencies, equipment manufacturers, and other members of the gas industry.
The mission of the CGA Cylinder Specifications Committee is to:
Develop, publish, and promote the widest possible distribution of technical information and recommendations for safe and responsible manufacture, handling, use, care, maintenance, and inspection of compressed gas containers;
Interactively assist and guide national, state, provincial and local governments and regulatory agencies in developing responsible container regulations;
Facilitate and help coordinate U.S.A.’s involvement and participation in working relationships and exchanges of container design and performance criteria, with international standards groups and international regulatory authorities;
Support the harmonization of container requirements, standards, specifications, and inspections, between regulatory authorities when common interest and mutual concern exists; and
Coordinate its activity with, and support, other CGA technical and safety committees, reporting to the CGA Board of Directors through CGA Staff and its TASS Council representative.
Cylinder Valve
The mission of the Cylinder Valve Committee of the Compressed Gas Association is to promote safety within the industry by addressing issues related to valves, pressure relief devices, and valve inlet and outlet connections used on cylinders and tubes.
The Committee is responsible for the preparation, maintenance, and publication, of standards, safety and technical bulletins that detail the design and application requirements, selection, and recommendations for pressure relief devices, valves and valve connections for gases and gas mixtures.
These publications are intended to promote safety in filling, shipping, and using compressed gases and gas mixtures, by defining performance and design standards for the valve, valve connections, and pressure relief devices, and by providing guidelines for pure gas and gas mixture assignments (excluding medical gas mixtures) to the valve outlet connection and pressure relief device.
The Committee cooperates with governmental agencies, ISO, other standards organizations, and other committees within the Compressed Gas Association to resolve issues pertaining to cylinder valves, connections and pressure relief devices.
Distribution and Fleet Safety
It shall be the duty of this committee to: keep itself advised of the rules and regulations regarding hazardous materials and any other transportation matters that affect the members of the Association; provide a forum to study problems of driver safety and operation and to exchange information on the operation of transportation equipment; coordinate with other standing committees in the exchange of pertinent information; recommend actions to be taken by the Association and CGA member companies on matters pertaining to transportation; provide input to the preparation of the Association’s response on transportation matters; ensure that matters of interest and concern relating to various modes of transportation are covered adequately; take other actions as may further the mutual interest of the members in matters that concern transportation and transportation safety.

Environmental
This committee shall consider environmental matters of direct concern to the compressed gas industry that are of a technical, regulatory, and standardization nature and report thereon to the Standards Council, other committees, or to the Board as required or appropriate. The committee shall consider these and any other environmental matters which are associated with the manufacture, transportation, storage, handling, use and disposition of compressed gases, cryogenic liquids, containers, and associated products, as may be referred to it. The committee shall also review and monitor proposed legislation at the federal, state, or provincial level that may impact operations of CGA members. It shall also develop recommendations for the publication and confirmation or revision thereof of CGA informational, technical and safety publications and/or audio visuals as appropriate, for use by manufacturers, distributors, users, shippers, carriers, equipment designers and installers, safety & environmental administrators, governmental agencies and others. The committee shall provide advisory guidance and education to the CGA, so that the Association can take appropriate action or make recommendations to industry, government, and national standards organizations. It shall also provide liaison with other associations regarding environmental matters within its area of interest and expertise.
Food Gases
The Food Gases & Equipment Committee shall promote safe practices and encourage compliance with regulatory and industry principles related to food and beverage gases, and equipment.
The Food Gases & Equipment Committee will monitor global initiatives and develop contacts, working relationships, and exchange of industry concerns with the following:
- international standards organizations;
- federal, state, provincial, and local governments;
- business organizations; and
- other regulatory agencies.
It shall be the duty of this committee:
- To address safety and regulatory compliance in the manufacture, operation, distribution, maintenance, and standardization of products utilizing food and beverage gases, and equipment.
- To develop, publish, and disseminate information concerning compressed and cryogenic food and beverage gases, and equipment.
- To develop, publish, and promote the broadest possible distribution of domestic and international standards and guidelines containing technical information and recommendations for safe, effective, and responsible practices that generally align with other recognized standards and guidelines.
- To coordinate applicable activities with other CGA technical committees and to report to the Board of Directors through Standards Council.
Hazard Communication
It shall be the duty of this Committee to develop appropriate recommendations on matters concerning hazard communications related to compressed gases, cryogenic liquids, and other related hazardous materials. This shall include but not be limited to:
- Basic principles applying to container labeling and marking and placarding of transport equipment in which compressed gas and cryogenic liquids are shipped.
- Recommend text for labeling, safety data sheets, and other informational materials, fostering uniform hazard warning practices and language to the extent practicable, and
- Review of proposals dealing with hazard warning practices originating with
legislative groups, regulatory authorities, code setting organizations and other hazard communication associates and associations.
The Committee should as appropriate, work in concert with other Association Committees.
Hazardous Materials Codes
Interfaces with the model Fire and Building Code organizations to identify issues affecting the industry and foster the principles of the Compressed Gas Association in the code development process.
Hydrogen Technology
The mission of the Hydrogen Technology Committee is to promote safety in the transportation, handling, storage, and use of hydrogen in liquid (cryogenic) form, gaseous form, and adsorbed in hydrides. The committee develops the following types of documents:
1. Standards for hydrogen systems and their components for industrial, fuel technology, and other applications.
2. Recommendations for updates to model codes and standards related to hydrogen systems.
This mission is accomplished by the preparation, publication, and maintenance of standards, position statements, technical and safety bulletins and alerts, and by working with other CGA committees, governmental agencies, and national/international standards organizations.
Hydrogen Production
Develops positions and publications to address the safe operation of plants producing hydrogen, carbon monoxide or synthesis gas and related materials affecting the compressed gas industry. This includes production, liquefaction, and pipeline distribution.
Industrial Gases Apparatus
This committee works to improve and promote safety in the area of the applications and use of compressed gas equipment and systems. The committee addresses and responds to issues involving the safe use of compressed gas equipment. This mission is accomplished by the preparation, publication and maintenance of standards, position statements, safety alerts and by working with other CGA committees, governmental agencies, and national/international standards organizations.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas
The mission of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Committee is to promote industry consistency by providing product and safety information to producers, marketers, and users of liquefied petroleum gases through uniform, standardized technical and safety guidelines and standards for the transportation, equipment, containers, filling, storage, and handling of these gases.
Medical Equipment
Medical Gases
The Medical Gases Committee shall promote safe practices and encourage compliance with regulatory and industry principles related to medical drug and device gases.
It shall be the duty of this committee:
- To address safety and environmental issues in the manufacture, operation, distribution, maintenance, and standardization of products utilizing medical drug and device gases.
- To develop, publish, and disseminate information concerning compressed and cryogenic medical drug and device gases.
- To develop, publish, and promote the broadest possible distribution of domestic and international standards and guidelines containing technical information and recommendations for safe, effective, and environmentally responsible practices.
- To coordinate its activity with other CGA technical committees and to report to the Board of Directors through Standards Council.
Natural Gas Technology
The Natural Gas Technology Committee shall promote safe practices and encourage compliance with regulatory and industry principles related to compressed natural gas (CNG), renewable natural gas (RNG), and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
It shall be the duty of this committee to:
- Promote safe practices related to the handling, supply, storage, and transportation of natural gas;
- Address issues concerning the design, installation, maintenance, and operation of natural gas supply systems;
- Develop, publish, and promote the broadest possible distribution of domestic and international standards and guidelines containing technical information and recommendations for safe, effective, and environmentally responsible practices; and
- Coordinate its activity with other CGA technical committees and to report to the Board of Directors through Standards Council.
Process Safety
The Process Safety Committee has been formed to coordinate the identification, development and communication of management system best practices related to process safety and risk management in the compressed gas industry. This would include providing guidance on the PSM information that is needed at industrial gas facilities.
Safety and Health
It shall be the duty of this committee to:
- Promote improved personnel safety and health practices among the Association members through exchange of information, compilation of statistics, and other appropriate educational programs;
- Create and review CGA publications and recommendations, where appropriate, so they are consistent with acceptable standards on safety and health practices;
- Provide advice and service to and/or receive assignments from the Standards Council, other standing committees, and the Association’s staff regarding safety and health in the manufacture, transportation, storage, use, and disposal of the gas and equipment products of the member companies.
Security
The purpose of the Security Committee is to help protect people, property, environment, information, and reputation by enhancing security in the compressed gas industry.
The Security Committee will address security issues that are relevant to the compressed gas industry by interfacing with other CGA committees and relevant trade organizations and regulatory government agencies.
During the time of a national disaster or an incident that will have a significant impact on the compressed gas industry, the Security Committee will provide an informational crisis communication system (ICCS) to CGA members. The ICCS will use existing known processes, e.g., DHS, NICC, FEMA, etc.
Specialty Gases
Our mission is to promote safety and technical knowledge with regards to the manufacture, packaging, transportation, and use of specialty gases across various industries including chemical process, semiconductor, environmental, etc. This is accomplished by using the knowledge of the industry experts in developing standards, technical bulletins, publications, and seminars. The Specialty Gases Committee works closely with other CGA committees, governmental agencies, and national/international standards organizations.
Canadian Cylinder Specifications
Represents the concerns of the compressed gas industry on issues relating to the specification, safe use, repair, and standardization of compressed gas cylinders, containers, and related equipment in Canada.
Canadian Medical, Food, & Beverage Gases & Equipment
Represents the concerns of the Canadian compressed gas industry on matters relating to the manufacture, distribution, quality, safety, and standardization of medical gases, medical devices, food and beverage gases, and equipment.
Canadian Pressure Vessels and Piping Systems
Represents the concerns of the Canadian compressed gas industry on issues relating to the regulation, installation, use, repair, safety, and standardization of registered pressure vessels and piping systems in Canada.
Canadian Health, Safety, & Environment
Promotes improved safety and health and environmental practices among CGA members through exchange of information, compilation of statistics, and other appropriate educational programmes.
Canadian Transportation
Monitors and participates in the updating and development of regulations and standards related to the transportation of dangerous goods handled in Canada by members of the Compressed Gas Association, with the intent of promoting and enhancing public safety.
