Coincidence may have brought Bill Hald into the valve and compressed gas industry more than 25 years ago, but curiosity—and the complexity hidden inside even the smallest components—kept him here.
“From the beginning of my work with the company, it was fascinating,” Hald says. “Learning how and why a different type of valve is used, and why each piece of the design is important, captured my attention right out of the gate. Within a couple of months, I found myself really getting into the details.”
Today, Hald serves as head of technical sales and business development for Rotarex’s specialty, compressed and medical gas division. His role places him at the intersection of product design, customer needs, technical standards and some of the world’s most advanced applications.
Much of his time is spent helping customers select the right equipment for highly specific uses.
“If a customer is building a new cylinder fleet, for example, I’ll help them navigate the valve options we have and identify the proper product for the application,” he says.
That work requires more than an understanding of a product catalog. It also demands familiarity with the standards and safety principles that govern how valves, outlets, pressure-relief devices and other components are designed and used.
“We work so closely with CGA standards that being familiar with the requirements is extremely important,” Hald says. “It allows me to assist throughout the process, both within our organization and with the broad spectrum of customers I work with every day.”
Over the course of his career, Hald has contributed to projects ranging from everyday industrial applications to space exploration. One opportunity in particular remains especially memorable: working with NASA on fueling components used in the Orion spacecraft program.
“We helped with a fueling system that used several different gases,” he says. “Even though our work was upstream in the process, watching Artemis launch and knowing we contributed in some small way was a great feeling.”
The scale and sophistication of those applications can surprise people who are unfamiliar with the compressed gas industry.
“When I tell people I work with valves, they often say, ‘You mean the thing on a propane tank?’” Hald says. “That’s not wrong, but there is so much more to it.”
He points to semiconductor manufacturing as an example. Rotarex produces valves used on cylinders supplying gases to semiconductor fabrication facilities, where microscopic contamination can disrupt production and destroy an entire batch of chips.
“People will ask why you would ever need a valve that advanced,” he says. “But when it is being used with a corrosive gas, and even one microscopic particle could ruin a batch worth seven figures, you need equipment that will perform exactly as intended.”
Once people begin to understand the engineering behind the products—and the regulations and standards that guide their design—their perception of the industry quickly changes.
“They often have to pick their jaws up off the floor,” Hald says.
Hald’s own understanding of the industry deepened when he became involved with the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) in 2004. CGA gave him the opportunity to move beyond knowing what the requirements were and better understand why they existed.
“It took things to a different level from a technical standpoint,” he says. “I learned why we do the things we do and why certain safety concerns are so important.”
That education did not occur only through formal standards or technical documents. It also came from participating in committees and task forces alongside professionals representing different parts of the industry.
“Sometimes I joined a task force not because I already had something specific to contribute, but because I knew there were things I could learn by being part of it,” Hald says.
That willingness to listen, learn and participate reflects what Hald sees as one of the greatest benefits of CGA membership. The knowledge he has gained strengthens his own work, while Rotarex’s participation gives the company an opportunity to contribute a manufacturer’s perspective to industry standards and safety practices.
“Being able to educate myself about the history of the industry, what is happening now and why we do the things we do has helped me throughout my career,” he says. “That knowledge is also a benefit to Rotarex.”

Being involved is a tremendous learning experience, but it also gives you an opportunity to give back.”

Looking ahead, Hald is particularly excited by the rapid expansion of semiconductor manufacturing and the new technologies that growth will require.
“We are seeing significant investment here in the United States,” he says. “Whenever that much development is happening, new technologies will follow because everyone wants to build the latest, most advanced systems. We are already seeing that evolution, and we are ready to be part of it from the beginning.”
For Hald, the most rewarding projects are those he can follow from an initial need through the development of a practical solution.
“Whenever you see a project through from beginning to end, it means something,” he says.
He also recognizes that the next generation of products and standards will not be developed in isolation. End users, manufacturers, suppliers and technical experts will need to work together to identify emerging risks and create better solutions.
“End users are going to tell us when they need something new to accomplish a particular goal,” Hald says. “When CGA helped develop the specialized valve outlets used in the electronics industry, it was because the industry said, ‘What is available is not good enough. We need something better.’”
Today, he believes the industry is asking that question again.
“Being able to answer that call is what excites me,” Hald says.
For more than two decades, Hald has built a career by looking beyond the apparent simplicity of a valve and understanding the larger systems, safety considerations and industries it supports. Through his work at Rotarex and his involvement with CGA, he continues to learn from the industry, contribute his own expertise and help develop the solutions that will carry it forward.
