For individuals who rely on supplemental oxygen, home oxygen therapy can be an essential part of daily life. But while oxygen is safe when used properly, understanding its potential hazards is important for patients, caregivers, and family members alike.
Oxygen itself does not burn, but it supports combustion, meaning materials can ignite more easily and burn faster and more intensely in oxygen-enriched environments. Everyday items, including lotions, oils, and personal care products, can create serious fire hazards when exposed to oxygen.
To help prevent accidents, the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) has developed a short educational video highlighting five essential home oxygen safety practices:
- Prevent oxygen fires by keeping equipment away from flames, heat sources, and sparks.
- Never smoke around oxygen, and don’t allow others to smoke where oxygen is used or stored.
- Store oxygen cylinders securely to prevent tipping, falling, or damage.
- Keep oils and grease away from oxygen equipment, including lotions, creams, and certain personal care products.
- Follow your oxygen supplier’s safety instructions and ask questions whenever you’re unsure.
Whether you use oxygen yourself or care for someone who does, these simple habits can help create a safer home environment.
