During the first quarter of 2019 (January to March), the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) issued the following new and/or revised safety standards and guidelines, position statements, and training videos:

AV-19-1 – Acetylene History Presentation Series

(90-minute Video Bundle: AV-20, AV-21, AV-22)
Released: January 7, 2019 (1st Edition)
See Training Bundle Details

These recorded webinars may be accessed as a package (AV-19) or as individual sessions (AV-20, AV-21, and AV-22).

AV-20 – General History of Acetylene and Its Properties (Part 1)

CGA AV-20 (30 minute webinar) – provides an overview of the history of acetylene from its discovery in the mid-19th century to the present. This presentation also includes information on the safe and efficient use of acetylene and how these recommendations originated.

AV-21 – General History of Acetylene and Its Properties (Part 2)

CGA AV-21 (28 minute webinar) – provides an in-depth review of the properties of acetylene and how these properties affect safe handling and use of this gas.

AV-22 – History and Current Practices for Handling Calcium Carbide

CGA AV-22 (30 minute webinar) – provides a brief history of calcium carbide, along with a review of its properties, handling, and uses. This presentation also includes guidelines on the safe and efficient use of calcium carbide, based on industry standards.

C-27 – Standard Procedure to Derate the Service Pressure of DOT 3-Series Seamless Steel Tubes

Released: February 12, 2019 (1st Edition)
See Publication Details

This publication provides a standard procedure to derate the service pressure of U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) 3-series seamless steel tubes with local thin areas that do not meet the minimum wall thickness of certain DOT specifications. This publication does not apply to tubes that have been condemned from any requalification method.

G-4.15 – Vacuum-Jacketed Piping in Liquid Oxygen Service

Released: January 25, 2019 (1st Edition)
Special Attribute: Harmonized Publication
See Publication Details

This publication addresses vacuum-jacketed piping used in any stationary industrial gases applications including air separation plants, other industrial gases facilities, and customer installations in liquid oxygen service. The document provides guidance to those individuals directly associated with the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of vacuum-jacketed piping systems used to transfer liquid oxygen. This publication does not supplant, but is intended to complement, national and local regulations and codes of practice.

M-1.1 – Guidance for Compressed Medical Gas Cryogenic Fluid Central Supply System Training

Released: February 21, 2019 (1st Edition)
See Publication Details

This publication provides recommended practices for training supplier personnel to install and maintain compressed medical gas (CMG) cryogenic fluid central supply systems in accordance with CGA M-1Standard for Medical Gas Supply Systems at Health Care Facilities.

P-74 – Standard for Tube Trailer Supply Systems at Customer Sites

Released: March 1, 2019 (1st Edition)
See Publication Details

This standard contains minimum requirements for high pressure tube trailers that store compressed gases and serve as supply systems at customer locations. It details requirements for locating/siting, selecting equipment, installing, starting up, maintaining, and removing tube trailer supply systems.

PS-55 – CGA Position Statement on Use of Nonsparking Tools

Released: February 27, 2019 (1st Edition)
See Publication Details

Describes CGA’s position on when to use nonsparking tools, better termed as low ignition energy tools, and what should be considered when developing a risk assessment for working on a flammable gas system.

S-1.1 – Pressure Relief Device Standards-Part 1-Cylinders for Compressed Gases

Released: February 8, 2019 (15th Edition)
Special Attributes:

  • Referenced by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
  • Referenced by International Code Council (ICC)

See Publication Details

CGA S-1.1 is the definitive standard for the selection of the correct pressure relief device that is required to meet the requirements of the U.S. DOT in 49 CFR for over 150 gases. It provides guidance on when a pressure relief device can be optionally omitted, and when the use of a pressure relief device is prohibited. This publication provides direction and guidance on the manufacture and testing of pressure relief devices as well as operation parameters and maintenance.

V-21-1 – Torque Guidelines for Sealing CGA Valve Outlet Connections (Formerly TB-14)
