Two CSA Liquefied & Compressed Natural Gas Codes Add References to CGA Publications

February 4, 2021

The Compressed Gas Association’s Natural Gas Technology Committee has been active in developing new standards and participating with other standards development organizations. One example is CGA’s work with the CSA Group. The CSA Group (formerly Canadian Standards Association) develops standards and testing/inspection/certification programs for use in Canada, the U.S., and other parts of the world.

CSA recently published two updated codes:

  • CSA B108.1 (2021 edition) – Compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling stations installation code
  • CSA B108.2 (2021 edition) – Liquefied natural gas (LNG) refueling stations installation code

These new codes replace CSA B108, Natural gas refueling stations installation code, 2018 edition. CGA members and staff participate on the CSA technical subcommittee on natural gas for vehicle refueling stations, which was responsible for updating the B108 codes.

The technical subcommittee accepted several updates proposed by CGA to CSA B108.1 and B108.2, including adding references in chapter 14 to two CGA publications:

  • CGA P-48, Reciprocating Cryogenic Pumps and Pump Installations
  • CGA P-56, Cryogenic Vaporization Systems – Prevention of Brittle Fracture of Equipment and Piping

By being involved in the CSA codes update process, CGA was able to add best practices and solid technical requirements to help the codes promote safety in dealing with CNG and LNG systems. CGA can also apply learnings from this update process in the development and maintenance of standards for natural gas and other industrial gases.
