CGA eLearning: Filling Uninsulated Carbon Dioxide Cylinders
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a versatile gas that is used in a wide range of applications, from carbonating drinks to agricultural applications and as a fire extinguisher. It is stored and transported in cylinders that must meet certain safety standards.
In addition to several technical safety standards, the Compressed Gas Association (CGA) created CGA TM-4, eLearning: Filling of Uninsulated Carbon Dioxide Cylinders, to provide guidance on key safety principles. This training is intended for cylinder fillers and handlers who are new to the industry and unfamiliar with the requirements and hazards of filling and handling of uninsulated carbon dioxide cylinders. TM-4 training covers the following areas:
- Carbon dioxide properties and hazards;
- Cylinder filler personal protective equipment (PPE);
- Types of cylinders and valves commonly used;
- Cylinder markings;
- Pre-fill cylinder inspection;
- Preparation of cylinders for filling;
- Filling cylinders; and
- Handling and storing full cylinders.
Overall, TM-4 is an important education resource that helps to ensure the safe handling and storage of carbon dioxide. By following the requirements set out in the standard, facilities that fill carbon dioxide cylinders can minimize the risk of accidents and ensure that the gas is of the highest quality, free from contaminants and other impurities. Whether you are a manufacturer, distributor, or end user of carbon dioxide, it is important to be aware of TM-4 and to ensure that all personnel involved in the filling process are trained and certified in the proper procedures and safety protocols.
In addition to TM-4, CGA offers a wide array of technical publications and safety resources on carbon dioxide. To learn more and access these resources, please visit our carbon dioxide safety resource center at https://www.cganet.com/carbon-dioxide-safety/.
About CGA eLearning
The Compressed Gas Association (CGA) created our growing library of eLearning modules to present core concepts from our standards library in a format that is accessible and engaging for employees who are new to the industry. These innovative training resources are designed to provide a helpful roadmap for employees as they learn how to safely handle and work with compressed gases. Here is what one of our members had to say about CGA’s eLearning content:
“Your training modules are exceptional quality, useful for safety awareness for entry-level and intermediate employees, and ‘first of its kind’ in the compressed gas industry to our knowledge.
Embedding these eLearning modules within our corporate training program represents one of the largest safety improvements [our company] has realized since becoming a member of CGA.”
Each module explores simple concepts presented in a concise, easy-to-follow format, and includes video demonstrations and quizzes to ensure the viewer is successfully absorbing the content. Individual users can complete modules at their own pace, closing the training at any time and returning later to pick up where they left off. When a user successfully finishes a module, they can generate a certificate of completion for your training records.
